Our History
Distinctive Funerals was founded in 2000 by Nick Mastro, Vic Dichiera and their families, with a simple but meaningful vision — to provide compassionate, personal funeral care delivered by local people who genuinely understand their community.
From the beginning, Distinctive Funerals set out to do things differently. Rather than becoming part of a large corporate network, the founders chose to remain family owned and locally operated, ensuring every decision is made here in South Australia by people who care deeply about the families they serve.
The original Distinctive Chapel held a unique place in the community. The building had previously been a Ukrainian church, which was thoughtfully adapted to provide a welcoming space for funeral services of all traditions — religious or non-religious. The chapel was enhanced with private viewing rooms and comfortable gathering spaces so families could farewell their loved ones with dignity and support.
As the community grew and the needs of families evolved, Distinctive Funerals continued to invest in better facilities and services. In 2015, following the Torrens to Torrens South Road redevelopment, a new purpose-built funeral facility was constructed. The modern chapel was designed to provide a calm, welcoming environment with larger seating capacity, dedicated viewing and arrangement rooms, and comfortable lounge areas where families can gather and reflect.
Today, Distinctive Funerals continues to honour the founding vision:
to help families create meaningful and personal farewells that celebrate life, respect cultural traditions and provide comfort during difficult times.
With decades of experience and deep connections throughout Adelaide’s diverse communities, the team understands that every family is different. Whether a service is traditional, contemporary, religious or non-religious, their role is to guide families with care, honesty and professionalism.
More than two decades since its founding, Distinctive Funerals remains proudly committed to the same principle that shaped the business from day one:
Locals Caring for Locals
More than two decades later, Distinctive Funerals remains proudly family owned and operated in South Australia.
Unlike many funeral providers, the business continues to make all decisions locally, ensuring every family receives genuine care rather than a one-size-fits-all service.
The team believes every life deserves to be remembered in a meaningful way. Whether arranging a traditional funeral, a contemporary celebration of life, or a culturally significant ceremony, their role is to guide families with experience, compassion and understanding.
Looking Forward
While the funeral industry continues to evolve, the values that founded Distinctive Funerals remain the same.
Families still come to Distinctive Funerals because they want honest advice, personal service and a team who truly cares.
More than anything, the focus remains on helping families create beautiful, respectful and memorable farewells that honour the life of someone they love.
Because at Distinctive Funerals, it has always been about people first.
